Skin Care For Winters - [Tips&Tricks]

For many people, the cold clear days of winter bring more than just a rosy glow to the cheeks. Winter is not fun for skin. Cold weather and low humidity result in dry air which sucks away all the moisture from skin every day without you even notice.

Dry skin - flaking, itchiness, tautness, cracking and bleeding, and harsh winter air makes the problem worse and neglecting of daily skin care can easily lead to dehydrating, flaky skin even eczema (in which the skin becomes inflamed). As soon as you turn the heat on indoors, the skin starts to dry out. Hereby, I'll be sharing winter skin care regimen, so that your skin stays moist and healthy through the winter months.

  • More Showers, fewer baths.
Avoid taking long baths in hot soapy water.  A hot bath sounds great for relaxation when you are cold, but the soapy hot water can remove protective oils from your skin. Choose lukewarm water to avoid stripping off natural oil(s) from your skin.

  • Don’t use soaps that contain Sodium Lauryl sulfate.
During the winter months, skin tends to be on the drier side. Sulfates wash away natural oils and will cause further dryness to the skin. Use a mild soap or one that is pH balanced. Look for ingredients that are natural.

  • Don’t rub your skin- Pat it dry.
Rubbing the skin may cause slight irritation and amplify dryness.

  • Keep the skin moisturised, always.
During winter, the outer layer of skin becomes very dry, apply moisturiser for winter right after a shower to help the skin’s protective layer stay intact. Try using a light all-natural product such as extra virgin coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, whipped Shea butter or whipped cocoa butter. Even those who have oily skin must use light moisturising lotions after cleansing to keep the skin soft.
  • Check the ingredients.
Look at the ingredients on any product you buy to treat something like severe itching or eczema. Stay away from creams with chemicals that could worsen the condition.

  • Moisturise from the inside out.
The food you eat affects the condition of your skin. Add things such as walnuts, Canola Oil, and ground flax seeds to your diet on a daily basis.

  • Drink lots of water.
You should always drink at least eight glasses of liquid – preferably good water. Stay far away from drinks like soda and caffeine, which dry the skin. A little warm water with lemon can be very refreshing and hydrating at the same time.

  • Use a humidifier.
A humidifier will increase the level of moisture in the air and help keep the skin soft and moisturised.
  • Overnight Moisturise.
Consider your skin slathers with deep moisturising lotion at night, wear cotton gloves, socks to seal in moisture. Knees, elbows, hands, and feet have a very thin layer of skin, therefore they tend to lose moisture quickly than other areas of the body.
  • Exfoliate.
Find a gentle exfoliating mask for your skin according to your skin type and exfoliate your face, hands, lips, body etc gently once or twice a week and you will notice a difference immediately with a lot smoother looking skin. Exfoliating body washes are also helpful in colder months.

  • Change your cleanser.
Change your cleanser accordingly as it can be extremely drying if you continue using your previous cleanser. Try something more hydrating that contains good moisture level. Apply a hydrating toner and moisturiser to seal in moisture.

  • Use DIY masks.
DIY hydrating masks that can superfoods for healthy skin, can provide needed moisture without being harsh on a skin. I'd shared some serious skin care DIY masks lately. You may check out here. Mix what you like together to create a cream or paste, and leave on skin for 10-30 minutes for lasting hydration.
